VITAL – Virtual & Immersive Teaching for Applied Learning in Health and Palliative Care
The VITAL research group designs and develops forward-thinking teaching and learning methods for the health sector – across disciplines, with courage, and with innovation at heart.
We believe that every learner is unique, so we customise our approaches to embrace diverse learning styles. By harnessing modern remote solutions, we make high-quality education accessible anytime, anywhere. Guided by evidence-based practices, we create solutions that transform health education, strengthen health services, and advance truly people-centred care.
Our Core Expertise
- Genuine, person-centered interaction – expertise in developing human-focused approaches
- Advancing pedagogy – including low- and high-fidelity simulation (remote and virtual simulations) and gamification (e.g., escape room concepts)
- Integrating technology into education – XR technologies, and serious games
- Palliative care
- Preparedness for disruptions and exceptional circumstances during normal times
- Development of nursing, public health nursing, and paramedic education
- Cultural sensitivity and embracing diversity
Research and Study Infrastructure
StudioK is versatile research and learning environment. It supports simulation, XR solutions, lectures, meetings, and other activities. High-quality image and sound systems enable operations onsite, remotely, and in hybrid formats. The open design with glass walls increases transparency and accessibility. StudioK is used for remote and blended learning, as well as satellite training in Raahe and Kuusamo.
An augmented reality simulation environment for major accident exercises is under development. We are also developing an AR simulation designed to address incidents of workplace violence.
Cases and References
Our ongoing projects drive forward a more inclusive and skilled future in health care by fostering multicultural competence in nursing, advancing palliative care education, and inspiring professionals to bring their expertise to Kainuu’s social and health care sectors.
We also create new learning experiences through extended reality and gamification. The Learning Life – Mystery 24/7 virtual escape game, created within a project coordinated by Kajaani University of Applied Sciences, won the Best Learning Solution in Finland 2023 award.
