Completing Remaining Studies 

Reinstatement of the Right to Study

If you failed to register as present for the academic year by the specified deadline and have therefore lost your right to study, you may apply for the reinstatement of your right to study if:

• you still have remaining study right time at Kajaani University of Applied Sciences (the normative duration of studies plus one additional year)
• any obstacles to studying arising from the provisions of the SORA legislation have been removed
• you have realistic possibilities of completing your studies within the remaining study right time (it is generally considered possible to complete approximately 30 ECTS credits during one semester).

The reinstatement of the right to study is not possible if:

• you have not been a degree student at Kajaani University of Applied Sciences
• your right to study has ended (i.e. you have graduated, resigned from your studies, or accepted a new right to study leading to a degree at the same or a lower higher education level)
• you no longer have any remaining study right time
• you do not have realistic possibilities of completing your degree within the remaining study time.

Applying for Reinstatement of the Right to Study

Apply for the reinstatement of your right to study by:

1. paying the application processing fee of EUR 50 in accordance with the Government Decree (1440/2014) through the KAMK Online Store (the processing fee is charged even if the decision is negative) and
2. completing the Application for Reinstatement of the Right to Study form.

Please note: Students who are liable to pay tuition fees must also pay the tuition fee for all semesters of attendance by the semester deadline (15 August / 15 December).

The application is first processed and reviewed by Study Services and the Study Counsellor. The Rector of Kajaani University of Applied Sciences makes the final decision on the reinstatement of the right to study.

As a rule, the right to study can be reinstated from the beginning of the following semester.

Request for Rectification

A student may submit a request for rectification concerning a decision on the reinstatement of the right to study to the Board of Kajaani University of Applied Sciences within 14 days of being notified of the decision.

Fixed-Term Right to Study

If you have not yet completed your studies, you may apply for a fixed-term right to study if:

• you started your studies on or after 1 August 2015 and have lost your right to study
• you no longer have any study right time remaining, you have already used a discretionary extension of study right, or you did not apply for a discretionary extension while your study right was still valid
• your degree is missing no more than one academic year’s worth of studies (approximately 60 ECTS credits in a Bachelor’s degree programme or 30 ECTS credits in a Master’s degree programme)

You cannot apply for a fixed-term right to study if

• you started your studies before 1 August 2015
• your right to study has ended (i.e. you have graduated, resigned from your studies, or accepted a new degree-awarding study place leading to a qualification of the same or lower level)
• you still have study right time remaining that can be reinstated
• more than one academic year’s worth of studies remains incomplete in your degree.

Applying for a Fixed-Term Right to Study 

1. First, discuss your situation with a Study Counsellor: Contact your programme’s Study Counsellor. During an initial guidance discussion, your situation will be reviewed. If it is determined that applying for a fixed-term right to study is appropriate, you will prepare a plan and timetable together with the Study Counsellor for completing your studies and then proceed as follows:
2. Pay the processing fee of €50: Pay the application processing fee for a fixed-term right to study through the KAMK online store.
3. Submit the application: Complete the Application for a Fixed-Term Right to Study form and include the study completion plan agreed upon with your Study Counsellor.
4. Processing and decision: Applications for a fixed-term right to study are assessed and decided on a case-by-case basis. The processing fee is non-refundable, even if the decision is negative. The application is first reviewed by Study Services to verify the payment of the processing fee and the sufficiency of completed studies. The application is then forwarded to the Study Counsellor and the Head of Competence Area for recommendation. The final decision on granting a fixed-term right to study is made by the Rector. The student will be informed of the decision by email.

Fixed-Term Right to Study in Practice

• A fixed-term right to study may be granted for a maximum of two semesters and, as a rule, takes effect from the beginning of the next semester. If the right to study is reinstated during an ongoing semester, the entire semester will count towards the granted study right.
• Students granted a fixed-term right to study are not entitled to register as absent and are not eligible for a discretionary extension of study right.
• Students liable for tuition fees must pay the tuition fee for each semester in which they register as present.

If you are not eligible for, or are not granted, a fixed-term right to study, you may apply to study through the Open University of Applied Sciences or apply for a new right to study through the joint application or a separate application process.
