Project description

With this project, KAMK UAS supports the waste management of the Hossa area tourism businesses as a part of their sustainability actions.
This topic has been brought to attention from multiple different organizations in Hossa area, Suomussalmi, Finland. Tourism businesses in the area need the possibility to sort and manage their waste in a sustainable way. This is needed for building their sustainability image and to maintain the sustainability certification (Green Key). Today their waste management is coordinated by Ekokymppi as part of their producer responsibility. The municipality’s (Suomussalmi) own waste management operator collects only mixed waste from residences, and it is not possible for them to manage specific and separate waste fractions.
In this project we will build alternative operating models to resolve waste sorting, and pilot new, small scale, technological solutions. The goal is to pilot advanced hygienic composting and small-scale further processing of plastic.
The project promotes environmentally friendly and sustainable tourism in the Hossa region and at the same time strengthens the positive and responsible image of companies operating in the region. Bringing a separate collection point in the immediate vicinity of tourism companies enables high-quality sorting, reducing the amount of mixed waste and thus also supports the municipality’s low-carbon and resource goals.
