Research and Study Infrastructure
With over 15 years of experience in the development of wastewater treatment technologies and the implementation of waste management practices in the Kainuu region, we have established a strong foundation in our field. The Applied Geopolymer Technology unit, founded in 2012, offers specialized expertise to our clients, encompassing a range of services from material characterization to small-scale industrial pilot projects.
The research themes currently under development within the unit include, but are not limited to:
- Nutrient recovery and reuse technologies,
- Valuable metal recovery,
- Physical and/or chemical wastewater treatment techniques,
- Advanced adsorptive material design,
- Zero-discharge concept implementation,
- Waste-to-value concept applications and
- Environmental monitoring.

Cases and References
The Circular Economy research group works in many kinds of projects. We have been involved in implementing the biogas plant of Puolanka and the roadmaps to reduce emissions from district heat production in Kajaani and Suomussalmi. We were also involved in the design of the low carbon implementation of the Sammonkaari block.
In the SUSWAM Clean Games 2021 and 2022 more than 350 people participated in collecting nearly 700 kilos of mixed waste in the Kajaani city area.

For students
KAMK’s courses on climate change include the basics of climate change, climate action in engineering and climate action in business.
The courses have been produced by the Circular Economy research group at KAMK in projects co-funded by the EU.
