Practical AI’s Application on SMEs Explored at KAMK

In November, students from Kajaani University of Applied Sciences (KAMK) and two partner universities, Albstadt-Sigmaringen in Germany and Kufstein Tirol in Austria, gathered to explore the role and impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in transforming businesses. 65 participants included students from 20 different nationalities and multi-disciplinary backgrounds and three professors, who joined forces in a blended intensive study program (BIP) to explore the transformative power of practical AI tools aimed at enhancing the performance and productivity of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and reshaping the future of business. Through the course, they met with AI experts who shared valuable experiences and practical case studies from their projects.

A significant part of the program involved working on a hands-on project where students collaborated in multicultural teams using AI tools to develop their business concepts. Through this collaboration, they explored the power of AI tools, allowing their diverse minds to fuel new ideas and approaches to tackling issues typically faced by start-ups and small companies. The knowledge and experience gained are highly valuable and useful for SMEs, our economy’s backbone, and students who aspire to start a business.

Furthermore, the participants also discussed the challenges SMEs face when adopting AI, including data privacy concerns, change management and ethical considerations. As the program concluded, students are encouraged to reflect on how to select and apply these AI tools, their role in shaping AI’s future and how to manage the transition effectively as future business leaders. This program showcased the power of collaboration across cultures and disciplines, equipping future leaders and managers with the knowledge and skills to tap into AI for transformative change.

In addition to learning about AI, the participants also had the opportunity to learn about each other’s cultures and the beauty of Finnish nature. As part of the experience, they participated in a game to explore Kajaani and took a trip to Vuokatti, where they experienced the huskies and the Superpark. The collaboration is a success, and we look forward to organizing more such programs in the future.
